The value in the Portland boutique Kiriko lies in the handcrafted care put into each of its goods. “Kiriko started as a response to mass-produced products,” explains Katsu Tanaka, who founded Kiriko with Dawn Yanagihara. “Audiences stopped caring about materials, durability, or craftsmanship. We wanted to create awareness to these values that really matter.” Their first inspiration was vintage woven Kasuri fabrics they got from a kimono manufacturer in Southern Japan. Today, Kiriko’s design team bases its decisions on how best to present such fabrics, each of which are checked by touch and feel. The shop carries original Kiriko designs, curated products handcrafted in Portland and Japan, and vintage Japanese goods. Kiriko Originals make up about half its sales. “We want to be the first brand to not waste any fabrics,” Tanaka says.
